Emma Bass at Royal Academy 2016

Emma was chosen from 12,000 artist submissions to be part of the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2016, and she flew to London for opening week.

Below are some photos of the event. You can also read Canvas magazine’s interview with Emma about the exhibition here.

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2016
Burlington House, the home of the Royal Academy. The sculpture is “Spyre" by Ron Arad RA As is traditional, the courtyard becomes an exhibition space in its own right; this year it’s a 16m tall kinetic sculpture. Each segment moves at a different speed, meaning every movement is unique and will never be repeated. At the very tip is a CCTV camera, live-streaming the courtyard footage onto the screen behind.

People and paintings
Angles...
“Avocado, Coconut, Egg”, an extraordinary work by Ghanian artist El Anatsui’s work made of bottle caps/foils woven together to make an extraordinary fabric... one of my favourite works in the show!
“Beard Aware” by the famous photographic duo Gilbert & George (and exhausted viewers... the people were often just as interesting to photograph as the artworks!)
“Avocado, Coconut, Egg”, by Ghanian artist El Anatsui, RA “Self-portrait as Charcoal on Paper” by duo Zatorski & Zatorski “Carrying the Skeleton” by Marina Abramovic, RA

Mending, Restoration”, sculptures by Japanese artist Aono Fumiaki... sculptures from remnants of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Broken can be made beautiful, and find renewed potential.
Smaller sculptures.
David’s Mach’s beautiful sculpture made of coat hangers - “Silver Hart” He was a curator of one of the 14 rooms... lovely chap!
