Emma Bass - Corpus Basilius

Emma Bass – Corpus Basilius

The Wallace Arts Awards

Corpus Basilius was inspired by Basilius Besler (1562 – 1629), apothecary and ‘philiater’ (or healer), who was first and foremost a botanist.

“Besler was a man who sought among plants not only drafts and remedies, but also disturbingly, the keys to the living world.

Besler rendered roots as they really are, in detail and with such emphasis that we may ask whether
or not he had adopted the theory of his Italian colleague, Caesar Caesalpinus, who believed that in plants we see man’s bodily shape.”

Corpus Basilius was a Finalist in 1993 Wallace Art Awards, and purchased by the trust.
